Bucks struggle to find identity as Rivers loses to Nuggets in first game as Bucks coach

Bucks Struggle to Find Identity in Rivers' Debut Loss to Nuggets

Doc Rivers began his tenure in Milwaukee with a disappointing 113-107 loss to the Denver Nuggets, leaving fans questioning the direction of the team's offence. While Damian Lillard's playing time has changed slightly, the Bucks' offensive game plan has remained largely the same, raising concerns about their lack of identity.

Against the league-leading Nuggets, Rivers took a cautious approach, prioritising familiar schemes over introducing new ones, which proved ineffective. The Milwaukee Bucks' high level of talent masked their offensive discontinuity, but their lack of a clear offensive structure was exposed against top defences.

The Bucks tried a variety of offensive sets, relying on Giannis Antetokounmpo in the post and pick-and-rolls with Lillard, but none of the sets consistently led to reliable scoring. This team lacks a fluid offensive rhythm and is often a "make it or break it" team at set positions.

In contrast, the Nuggets showcased their offensive prowess led by Jamal Murray, chipping in 35 points. Murray repeatedly took advantage of Lillard's mismatches and easily found him for mid-range pull-ups. Even Nikola Jokic's "lacklustre" triple-double highlighted the Nuggets' offensive efficiency, showcasing their ability to create quality shots on every possession.

Rivers' top priority is to establish a reliable offensive system for the Bucks and unleash Lillard's full potential. While Lillard's shooting percentage looks decent, his inconsistent play raises concerns about his ability to consistently control the offence. Rivers will have to decide whether to adjust Lillard's role to better utilise his ball-handling skills or find a way to integrate him more effectively into the existing playbook.

The Bucks' defence, despite struggling throughout the season, has shown signs of improvement under Rivers. However, their deficiencies on the offensive end remain the primary issue. Using the league's best lineup as a benchmark, the Bucks must find their offensive identity and unleash their full potential if they hope to contend for a championship.
